GEORGE WALDO BROWNE (1851-1930)

LOCAL AND NATIONAL POETS OF AMERICA.
BROWNE, George Waldo (Victor St. Clair), author, was born at Deerfield,N.H., Oct. 8, 1851, son of John C. and Martha (Lawrence) Brown, and grandson of James and Joanna (Willey) Brown, of Puritan descent. He was educated in the Deerfield high school, and at the age of twenty began his literary career. He published a paper called "The American Young Folks" in 1882, and in 1885 he disposed of it to the "Youth's Companion," and later published for one year a monthly publication called the "Laurel Wreath." He has written numerous serials and short stories and a large number of poems. Amoung his most important books are " A Daughter of Maryland" (1895), "The Woodranger" and "Two American Boys in Hawaii" (1899), "Paradise of the Pacific," "Pearl of the Orient," "The Young Gunbearer" (1900), "The Hero of the Hills" (1901), and "The Far East and New America" (6 vols. 1902). He contributes to the leading juvenile periodicals of the country and has met his greatest measure of success in the production of stories for boys. A portion of his time has been given to public lecturing. He was married, Jan. 8, 1891, to Nellie May, eldest daughter of Orland Dix and Mary Fidelia (Fessenden) Barber, of Townsend, Mass.

SKETCHES OF WRITERS.
XVII. — edward stratemeyer
While not usually given as high a place in literature as the authors of the so-called novel, historical or otherwise, the writers of successful juvenile books must possess,a special and peculiar talent removed from the ordinary. This is proved by the fact that of the many who essay this kind of work very few succeed. I am inclined to think there are more failures in this field than in any other. Really, he who writes to entertain the mind of the child must be capable of pleasing the parent without resorting to those often essential parts of fiction, the complicated plot and an element of love.
Only a few years ago the writers of juvenile books could be counted upon the fingers of one hand, but these included such noted names as
"Oliver Optic," the worthy pioneer of this class of literature, Rev. Jacob Abbott, Rev. Elijah Kellogg, Louisa M. Alcott, and the inimitable Captain Mayne Reid. Soon others followed, among them Horatio Alger, Jr., "Harry Castlemon," Edward S. Ellis, W. O. Stoddard. E. S. brooks," Pansy," and "Sophie May." Then the foremost of these began to pass away, and new Writers came into the class, these last aiming not only to amuse, as their predecessors had done, but to instruct their readers in history and in the various lines of work and pastime.
A little more than four years ago, a few months after the death of William T. Adams, whose pseudonym heads the list given above, while in conversation with the senior member of the old and highly respectable publishing house of Lee & Shepard, who have placed on the market so many excellent books for youthful readers, I was asked who there was among the young writers of juvenile stories to take the place so long filled by the late "Oliver Optic." I replied, without dreaming of being a prophet: "I do not know, unless it is Edward Stratemeyer." Inside of a year the truth of my words was verified. Mr. Stratemeyer, then little known to book readers, suddenly sprang to the front rank of story-tellers, and the place left by the decease of the famous "Oliver Optic" was no longer empty.
Next to the book in which they are
interested, most readers like to learn something of its author, his manner of work, his creative motive, how he came to write, his associations, and personal appearance. It is with this object in view that I am writing this brief biographical sketch of him who has one of the largest numbers of admirers among the creators of good, wholesome books for young people.
Edward Stratemeyer was born in Elizabeth, N. J., October 4, 1862, and as a boy was a great reader of the stories of
"Oliver Optic," Horatio Alger, Jr., and other juvenile authors, thus laying the foundation for his future work, for no doubt this early and earnest study of the books of such writers did much toward fitting him to take up and wear the mantle they were to lay aside at a time most opportune to his advantage. No writer is really successful who is not himself an indefatigable reader.
Still, Mr. Stratemeyer, while possessing a natural inclination and encouragement to begin work, did not rush hastily into print, but waited for the experience and maturity of manhood. In his twenty-sixth year he wrote his first long story, but not satisfied with it at the time, he laid it aside for a year. Giving it a careful revision then, he sent it to Golden Days, where it was accepted with high praise for the young author. He followed this with several other serials, all of which met with a flattering reception. His next venture was with the Argosy, then a publication for young readers, to which he contributed regularly until 1893. Offered the position of editor of Good News, he accepted, and filled this office for about a year, adding greatly to the popularity and success of the paper by bis own writings and by judicious selections from the work of his contributors.
While editing and contributing to Good News his first book, "Richard Dare's Venture," was brought out by the Merriam Company, of New York, to be speedily followed by three other volumes, all meeting with such flattering success that he turned his mind toward book work entirely. His most successful work in this line was "Under Dewey at Manila," which was both timely and meritorious. It was published by Lee & Shepard in September, 1898, as the first volume of the Old Glory Series. The book was an instantaneous success, and the question was no longer asked as to who would fill the place of "Oliver Optic." The earnest admirer and student of Mr. Adams's works had won the glory. "Under Dewey at Manila" was quickly followed by "A Young Volunteer in Cuba," "Fighting in Cuban Waters," and other volumes in the same series, the object of which was to cover in an attractive manner the history of the Spanish-American war and the rebellion in the Philippines.
Reviewers in treating of these books had generally words of praise to offer. Realizing the success of Mr. Stratemeyer's other books, Lee & .Shepard secured the right to publish his Ship and Shore and Bound to Succeed Series, the last including "Richard Dare's Venture," and other tales of city and country life.
The Old Glory Series proving the greatest success in the line of juveniles since the publication of the Army and Navy Series by "Oliver Optic," it was perfectly natural that the publishers should ask Mr. Stratemeyer, the popular successor of Mr. Adams, to complete the unfinished story left by him, entitled "An Undivided Union," being the last of the Blue and Gray —On Land Series. This must have been a labor of peculiar pleasure, since "Oliver Optic" had been Mr. Stratemeyer's ideal from boyhood. When this book, the product of two minds, appeared, it was received with the hearty praise belonging to both authors. Running, through several editions, it has served to create an additional demand for Stratemeyer books.
Subsequently Mr. Stratemeyer was invited to perform a similar task on the unfinished works left by the late Mr. Alger, for whom our author had a warm personal friend-.ship. These books were completed under one of the several pseudonyms of Mr. Stratemeyer. Among the more recent books entirely the products of his own brain are "To Alaska for Gold," a story of the stampede to the Klondike; "Between Boer and Briton," a tale of war adventure in South Africa; and "On to Pekin," a stirring narrative of the campaign in China. Despite his vivid accounts of recent struggles, Mr. Stratemeyer has not neglected the early history of our republic, and he has written most interestingly of colonial days in New England, among these books being "The Minute Boys of Lexington," and "Minute Boy of Bunker Hill," published by Dana Estes & Co., and "With Washington in the West," published by Lee & Shepard. He has also written a highly successful " Boys' Life of William McKinley." All his books, besides being written in his attractive style, are filled with historical information gathered in a most painstaking manner. They are to be found in the public libraries, and are sold extensively in England.
As Mr. Stratemeyer is still in the prime of life, and an industrious worker, with a good list of books already to his credit, the reading youth can confidently look forward to an amount of work from him which shall equal in quantity as well as quality that of his illustrious predecessors in this field. Mr. Stratemeyer thoroughly deserves his popularity, and he drives his typewriter without becoming careless or indolent as a result of the remarkable success he has attained.

It is obvious that G.W. Browne was an avid reader of William Taylor ADAMS (Oliver Optic). A great many of his books are available on Gutenberg.
He was also greatly influenced by Edward S. Ellis, who wrote the General Introduction to the "New America and the Far East" series. Many of Edward Sylvester Ellis works may be read on Gutenburg Here. Ellis married Clara Spalding Brown in 1900, I wonder if she was related to G. W. Brown(e) who added an 'e' to his name when he began writing. Her original name was Ellis???

DANDY ROCK (character) Real name: Rock Randel. Former Texas Ranger, frequently referred to as The-Man-from-Texas,who appears in six stories written by George Waldo Browne for Beadles Half Dime Library (1879-1880). In keeping with dime novel tradition he is handsome, wears his hair and mustache long, and dresses in "a suit of gaudy pattern." His companions include Jared Jones (also known as Silver Ray and Reckless Ray) who is a "Down-east Yankee" distinguished by his silver hair and unkempt beard, and Chauncy Gifford who wears his hair "eastern style" rather than "mountain length." In his first adventure (Dandy Rock, The Man from Texas. A Wild Romance of the Land of Gold," 86-1/2DL, Mar. 18, 1879), he is in California looking for gold. In the last story (Dandy Rock's Rival; or, The Hunted Maid of Taos," 1731/2DL, Nov. 16, 1880) he travels to New Mexico.
The stories are improbable affairs of pursuit and rescue filled with dialogue so rich in backwoods dialect that it is difficult to follow. Dandy Rock's favorite expression is "Jeems Stopple!" By the end of each story the reader is out of breath from kepping track of the action. (From "The Dime Novel Companion" by

SPECIMEN OF GEORGE WALDO BROWNE'S STYLE

The Golden Hand; or, Dandy Rock to the Rescue." Half-Dime Library No. 131, pp. 7-8.

"Whoop—whoop-ee! I'm the roaring lion o' ther Rockers! the hard-pan o' ther Gila! Whar's the goat es shins up to ther boss king o' the South-wes'? Jess show him to me. Pick him out quick!" and the burly speaker, whose wild speech and antics had collected quite a crowd in front of the leading "shebang" of Mad River "City"—the "Miner's Home"—danced to and fro in frantic excitement.

"Whar am he? They sed he war hyar, and I hev kem all the way frum Lone Pine to spot him! Jess trot him out!" and the giant removed his broad sombrero to wipe away the great beads of perspiration that had gathered on his brow.

The lookers-on watched him in silence. Some seemed awed by his braggartism; while others gazed upon him in wonder.

"Who is he?" one at last ventured to ask.

"Dunno, 'less he is Big Sandy, the bully o' the lower lead," answered another.

"Who am I?" snorted the stranger, catching the words. "Ain't I tole ye? I'm the Gila Lion! the hard-pan o' the Rockers! Yas; I'm Big Sandy, too, right frum the Lone Pine! But whar's my game? Whar's the galoot es lifted out more coyotes at Long Meader row than enny other hoss? I want to see him! I want to put this paw on him!" and he extended the enormous member menacingly.

"He's arter Rock Randel!" exclaimed a by-stander.

"Yas! that's him—The-Man-from-Texas! Whar am he?"

"Dandy Rock hes buried his buttons!"

"Wot?"

"Rock turned up his toes in Black Pocket waller!"

"Wot?"

"Rock Randel went under yesterday!"

"Wot?"

As the other ceased his explanations, the giant stared upon the crowd in apparent disappointment.

"The-Man-from-Texas wiped out!" he howled at last: "my hard-fought victoree stolen from me jess es I hed my huf on him? Hev I kem all the way from Lone Pine to be bu'sted in this way?" and tearing about wildly for a moment, he flung his sombrero spitefully against the side of the building, his countenance showing a plain case of despair.

Just as the hat touched the wall and quivered there for an instant ere it began to descent, the swift gleam of a knife darted through the air, and thrown by a skillful hand, the weapon pierced its crown, pinning it to the spot!

The throng stared in surprised.

Big Sandy trembled and gazed about in amazement.

"Who did that?" he cried.

No one seemed able to answer.

"Why don't ye spoke?" the giant went on. "S'pose I'm goin' to hev my skulp-piece used like thet? Ef the goat es did thet don't show hisself less'n a mink I'll kerwallop the life right out o' his boots! Hyar?"

If the individual in question heard the demand he evidently did not care to have the "life kerwalloped out o' his boots," as no one stepped forward.

"Jess show me ennything but a sneakin' coyote!" growled the man, and advancing to the place he was in the act of wrenching his hat from its position, when another knife sped by his head, and, half severing the lobe of his left ear, struck the wall with a dull thud!

With a shriek of terror the giant bounded back, and with the blood streaming from his wound, howled most vociferously.

For a time wild commotion followed.

When at last it had become more quiet, and Big Sandy had checked the flow of blood from the cut, he looked sullenly around exclaiming fiercely:

"Ef sum o' ye don't lick thet man out fer me, I'll kerwallop the hull lot o' ye! Jess p'int me a man! Ennybody'll do; only give me a chance to spread him!"

The half-cowed stranger had hardly ceased speaking when a ringing voice from the rear of the spectators, said:

"Hyar's your beaver every shoot! Jess walk up and take your meat like ye war hungry!"

Every one present recognized the tone, and to their unspeakable astonishment Dandy Rock pushed his way forward and confronted the bully.

Big Sandy rubbed his eyes and glared upon the Texan in unfeigned amazement.

"Who mought yer be?" he finally blurted out.

"Open yer peepers and see fer yerself," said Rock, nonchalantly, as he coolly folded his arms and faced the other.

"Never see'd yer picter afore. Don't know ye!" affirmed the giant.

"Tis The-Man-from-Texas!" cried a voice from the crowd.

"But ye sed he hed taken up his walkin' papers! Wot in creation can I b'lieve ye say?"

"Look hyar, old tearer," exclaimed the Texan, "ye said ye had come from Lone Pine to see me. Ef ye hev any bizness spit it out suddint, fer I'm in a pesky hurry."

"Did ye hang my hat up there, old chap?"

"Jess look at the knives, and ef ye don't find two R's cut on the handles I won't claim 'em, and ye can walk around me jess es ye are a mind to."

Pulling them from the wall Big Sandy found they were marked as Rock had declared.

"Ken ye do thet every pop, old 'coon?"

"I reckon. It's a trick I 1'arnt from a pard o' mine onc't. Jess stand mulish and let me spot the end o' yer nose. I won't touch more'n half an inch."

Shifting his position uneasily, the boaster found his courage fast leaving him before the Texan's cool audacity.

"Shall I tickle it?" continued Rock, appearing impatient for the trial. "I won't spile yer beauty."

"Git out!" blurted Big Sandy. "All I ax o' ye is to keep away from me; I ain't anything to do with ye!" and the quondam "lion o' the Rockers" shrunk away in disgraceful retreat.

As the crowd began to jeer at him, he wheeled about and yelled savagely:

"Ef thar's a goat hyar es dares to show his face I'll pan him heavy. Hyar thet?"

The mob did seem to hear, and as no one advanced to accept the challenge, quiet was soon restored.
